Background: One of the challenges facing public health officials is the behavioral problems among students, and statistics have shown an upward trend of suicide among students during the last decade in Iran. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the relationship between self-injurious behavior and risk perception and emotion regulation in female students.
Materials and methods: The research was descriptive-cross-sectional and correlational. The statistical population included all female undergraduate students of Islamic Azad University, Rodehen Branch in the academic year of 2023, who were selected by the available sampling method and according to the inclusion criteria, 120 female students were selected. Self-harm questionnaire, risk perception style questionnaire and cognitive-emotional regulation questionnaire were used to collect information. Data analysis were done by descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient and multivariate regression via SPSS statistical software version 26.
Results: The results showed that between the total score of risk perception (r=-0.491, P<0.05), physical risk perception (r=0.432, P<0.05), and social risk perception (r=-0.363, P<0.05) there is a negative and significant correlation with tendency to self-injurious behavior in female students. This correlation between the total score of positive emotion regulation strategies (r=-0.673, P<0.05) and the total score of negative emotion regulation strategies (r=0.611, P<0.05) with the tendency to self-injurious behavior in female students were significant at the 0.05 level.
Conclusion: Individuals with adequate emotion regulation and risk perception abilities are less likely to engage in self-harming behaviors.
