Abstract:   (230 Views)
Background: The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of compassion-focused therapy (CFT) with short-term solution- focused therapy (STSFT) on cognitive self-esteem and aggression in male adolescents with self-injurious behaviors.
Materials and methods: The study was semi-experimental with pre-test, post-test and follow-up with the control group design. The statistical population of this study included all male students with self-injurious behaviors in the second level of middle school in Tabriz City who were studying in the academic year of 1402-1403. In total, 45 male students with self-injurious behaviors were selected by targeted non-random sampling method and randomly divided into three groups (15 people in each group). The members of the CFT group and the STSFT received their specific intervention in 8 and 6 sessions of 1.5 hours, respectively, but the control group did not receive any treatment. Three groups answered the 58-question self-esteem Cooper Smith and 29-question aggression Buss and Perry questionnaires before, after and 4 months after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using analysis of repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni's post-hoc test.
Results: Compassion-focused therapy with short-term solution- focused therapy leads to increased self-esteem and reduced aggression in male adolescents with self-injurious behaviors in the post-test, compared to the control group (P<0.001). The effect of both treatments on self-esteem and aggression was lasting in the follow-up phase. In addition, the effect of both treatments on self-esteem and aggression in post-test and follow-up was not significant.
Conclusion: According to the findings of the present study, it is possible to use CFT and STSFT to increase self-esteem and reduce aggression in adolescent boys with self-injurious behaviors.
