Abstract
Recently, the importance of human microbiome function in her disease and health has been shown. Probiotics are one of the effective factors in creating balancing the gut microbiota. Due to the many applications of probiotics in various fields, especially medicine, in order to discover new products, a new generation of probiotics including prebiotics, synbiotics and postbiotics were identified. Aspects of the function of these compounds are still unknown; therefore, this review article reviewed the general aspects of the new generation of probiotics, including explanation of terms, description of mechanisms of action, biological activities and their effect in improving human and animal health. Studies show that prebiotics are food for probiotics, synbiotics are a combination of probiotics and prebiotics, postbiotics are compounds produced by probiotics and parabiotics are inactive microbial cells. Consuming sufficient dose of new generation of probiotics leads to a positive effect on the microbiome of the digestive system and the creation of ubiiosis, and they lead to the prevention and treatment of many diseases in humans and animals including obesity, tooth decay, various cancers, intestinal diseases, etc. despite the fact that the therapeutic effects of the new generation of probiotics have been proven in clinical trials, the exact mechanisms of these effects are still unknown. Also, due to the lack of stability tests in clinical studies related to the new generation of probiotics, it is not possible to issue a definitive opinion regarding their therapeutic effects.
