Background: Self-care is an important factor in maintaining optimal health for people with heart failure, which is one of the common measures to treat or prevent diseases is adherence of treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the comparative effect of self-care training by group discussion method and teach back method on the level of treatment adherence in heart failure patients admitted to Shahid Rajaee Heart Hospital in 2023
Materials and methods: In this experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a randomized control group, 60 patients were selected based on the inclusion criteria and were divided into three groups: discussion method, and teach back method and control group. The self-care training program was conducted by group discussion method and teach back method, and there was no intervention in the control group. The questionnaires were completed before the beginning and three weeks after the educational intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22 software.
Results: There was a statistically significant difference in treatment adherence in the group discussion group after implementing self-care education (112.05 ± 18.55) and the teach back group (120.05 ± 24.68) compared to the control group in phase 2 (96.42 ± 10.94) in patients with heart failure. (p ≤ 0.025 with group discussion method and P = 0.003 with group teach back method). There was a statistically significant difference in the mean score of treatment adherence in the group discussion group and the teach back group after the implementation of self-care training (P=0.04), and the mean score of treatment adherence was higher in the teach back method group.
Conclusion: Self-care education using teach back and group discussion methods can improve treatment adherence in heart failure patients, and teach back method education was more effective. These two educational methods as a validated, feasible, easy, effective, and inexpensive intervention can be included in the agenda of nurses and caregivers.
