The effectiveness of a period of high intensity interval training and bee pollen consumption on cognitive performance and percentage of healthy cells in the CA1 and CA3 regions of the hippocampus of rats exposed to cadmium

Background: The aim was to determine the effect of HIIT and pollen on cognitive performance and healthy CA1 and CA3 hippocampal neuron rate of cadmium-exposed rats.
Materials and methods: In this experimental study, 25 Sprague-Dawley rats, 8 weeks old and weighing 258 g, were divided into five groups of five, including healthy control, cadmium, cadmium and pollen (PO), cadmium and HIIT (HIIT), cadmium and pollen and HIIT (HIIT-PO). 400 mg/kg.l CdCl2 dissolved in water was administered to all groups except healthy group. 200 mg/kg.l pollen in 2.4 ml normal saline was administered by gavage to the (PO/HIIT-PO) groups, and to determine the maximum intensity of exercise, the standard Bedford incremental test was taken among the HIIT-PO and HIIT groups, and the shuttle box test was taken for avoidance memory. First, the cadmium group was compared with the healthy group, then all groups were compared with cadmium. 48 hours later, the animals were anesthetized with ketamine (50 mg/kg) and xylazine (20 mg/kg), and the hippocampus was extracted and cell counting was performed. The results were analyzed by independent t-test and two-way analysis of variance.
Results: Cadmium reduced the rate of healthy hippocampal CA1 and CA3 neurons and avoidance memory (P≤0.05). The effect of HIIT and flower pollen increased the performance of all indices (P≤0.05). However, the interaction of the two had no significant effect (P≥0.05).
Conclusion: Flower pollen and HIIT, with their antioxidant properties and increased expression of genes regulated by Nrf2 and PGC1α, increased the rate of healthy hippocampal CA1 and CA3 neurons and avoidance memory performance of poisoned mice.
