Abstract:   (13 Views)
Background: The quality of sleep among students is of significant importance, particularly as there has been a lack of comprehensive studies in this demographic in recent years. Additionally, considering the advancements in technology and changes in sleep patterns among young people, this study was conducted to assess sleep quality and related factors among medical science students at Islamic Azad University, Zahedan Branch, in 2023.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 126 students of medical sciences from the Islamic Azad University, Zahedan Branch, were selected through stratified sampling. Data were collected using two questionnaires for demographic variables and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for assessing sleep quality. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21, employing Chi-square statistical tests. The significance level was also considered to be 0.05.
Results: The results indicated that 32.6% of the students reported good sleep quality. In terms of subjective sleep quality, 26.9% and 37.4% of students rated their sleep quality as very good and good, respectively. A significant association was found between sleep quality and factors such as gender, field of study, duration of mobile phone use, and academic performance (P<0.05).
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that students are not achieving optimal sleep quality. Given the significance of this demographic and the impact of sleep quality on their academic performance, it is recommended that targeted interventions be implemented to educate students on sleep improvement techniques, effective time management, and strategies to reduce technology use prior to sleep
